What is Chrysalis?

What Exactly is the Chrysalis Weekend?

A Chrysalis flight is a 3-day spiritual renewal event offered twice a year. It is a non-denominational spiritual renewal time providing an opportunity for youth to learn about faith, to experience Christian love and support, and to make new faith commitments. It provides support, accountability, fellowship, and prayer for teens as they encounter the pressures of the teenage years. The point is to inspire, to challenge and to equip them for a closer walk with Christ and for Christian action at home, church, school, and community.

Chrysalis provides a way to enjoy Christ’s friendship and love and to be Christ’s partner in the world.

What Happens on the Weekend?

You will enjoy 3 days of singing, learning, laughing, worshipping, reflecting, praying, and participating in small groups. At no time will you be forced outside your comfort zone. Discussions center around 14 talks given by youth, adult, and clergy speakers. Talks present the theme of God’s love and grace, how that love and grace comes alive in the Christian community, and how it is expressed in the world. You will discover how love and grace are real in your life, and how you can share that love and grace to others.

Who should go to Chrysalis?

The weekend is open to members of all Christian denominations, designed for the development of Christians who:

  • Desire to strengthen their spiritual lives
  • May have unanswered questions about their faith
  • Who may be seeking a stronger walk with Christ

Chrysalis is for high school youths, grades 9-12 (must be 14 years old). At these ages, young people are making major decisions about religion, lifestyles, covations, and relationships. Chrysalis challenges teens to grow not only in mind and body, but also in spirit and faith. The weekends are called Flights and are offered on the same weekend for girls and boys, but at different locations. The separations allows the youth to freely explore their relationship with God without worrying about how they may appear to the other gender. It provides an opportunity outside their local congregation or youth group to grow in their faith alongside future friends.

What does the butterfly symbolize?

The butterfly is the central image and metaphor of the chrysalis experience. An ancient Christian symbol of Christ’s death and resurrection, the butterfly illustrates one model of the spiritual journey: Caterpillar, cocoon (chrysalis), and butterfly. To become what is meant to be, the caterpillar essentially dies as it goes through a metamorphosis in the chrysalis until it finally becomes a butterfly and breaks outof the chrysalis. Our Christian transformation is essentially the same: we must die with Christ to our old self through faith in God’s accepting love, rising with Christ to a new life motivated by the hope in God’s promises, and going forth with Christ in love to joyfully share Christ’s ministry of reconciliation and love with an alienated world.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here! - 2 Cor. 5:17 (NIV)

Chrysalis is designed for high school youth ages 14 to 18. At this age, young people are making major decisions about religion, lifestyle, vocation, and lifelong relationships. Chrysalis challenges them to grow not only in mind and body but also in spirit and faith.

The Chrysalis weekend events, referred to as Flights, are offered separately for girls and boys to allow youth freedom to explore their relationship with God without worrying about how they may appear to the other gender. It provides an opportunity outside their local congregations or youth groups to grow in their faith alongside their peers.
